Overview

Breaktime is a Boston-based nonprofit whose mission is to break the cycle of young adult homelessness by providing career support, resources, and direct services. Many of these services rely on scheduled appointments between staff and young adults, which were previously managed through paper-based systems. As the organization grew, coordinating and tracking these appointments became increasingly difficult.

Our JumboCode team partnered with Breaktime to design and build a Progressive Web App (PWA) that digitizes this process through a centralized booking system. The platform allows young adults to schedule appointments and communicate with staff, while giving Breaktime staff and administrators tools to manage bookings and coordinate services more efficiently.

I led the product and interface design, translating Breaktime’s operational needs into a structured digital experience. Working closely with the Breaktime team and JumboCode developers, the project moved from early planning and workflow design to full implementation.

Context

How Breaktime Delivers Support

Breaktime is a Boston-based nonprofit dedicated to breaking the cycle of young adult homelessness by providing career support, essential resources, and one-on-one guidance. Many of these services rely on scheduled meetings between staff members and young adults, where participants receive support ranging from career planning to resource coordination.

As Breaktime’s programs expanded, these appointments became a critical part of how the organization delivers support. Staff needed a reliable way to schedule sessions, track past interactions, and coordinate availability across different team members.

The Problem

Why the Existing System Wasn't Sustainable

Despite the growing importance of these appointments, the scheduling process was largely handled in person and on paper. This created several challenges: appointments were difficult to track, past interactions were not easily accessible, and coordinating availability between staff and young adults required significant manual effort.

Without a centralized digital system, staff often had limited visibility into booking history, communication between participants and staff was fragmented, and the overall process became increasingly inefficient as the organization continued to grow.

Create a digital booking system that replaces paper scheduling while supporting the workflows of young adults, staff, and administrators.

Solution

Progressive Web App (PWA)

Our JumboCode team developed a Progressive Web App (PWA) that replaces Breaktime’s paper-based scheduling with a centralized digital booking system accessible on both desktop and mobile browsers.

I led the product and interface design, translating Breaktime’s workflows into a structured system for young adults, staff, and administrators, while collaborating closely with the JumboCode development team and Breaktime throughout the project.

Current Stage

We're currently focused on designing and building the admin interface that supports Breaktime's staff workflows and oversight of the booking system.

Next, we'll finalize the remaining flows, refine the interface, and test the experience with Breaktime before launch.
